Lennart Johannson to Step Down as UEFA Head

08 January 2006

The longtime president of European football's governing body has announced he will not seek another term as UEFA's leader.

Lennart Johansson said Sunday that he will step down from his post when his term in office expires in 2007. The 75-year-old Swede has been UEFA's president since 1990.

Johansson told a Greek weekly newspaper, K, that the time has come to let someone replace him and for him to go fishing.

German football legend Franz Beckenbauer, the head of the organizing committee for the 2006 World Cup, had tried to convince Johansson to run again. The only official candidate so far is former French football great Michel Platini, who was elected to UEFA's executive committee in 2002.
